There are many different ways and various techniques to hit the tennis ball. There are various ways (forms) to hit the tennis ball to achieve a desired result (function). But each of them has their own advantages and disadvantages. This is the age of topspin and robust hitting from the baseline. These days it is very popular to hit the forehand with the semi-western grip and the backhand with the double-handed grip. Why because as a junior it is easy to counter topspin, easier to generate topspin and it also adds an element of strength on both flanks. While this is in vogue, this is most certainly not the only way to hit the tennis ball.
While working at the junior level a good coach will always take into account the following factors: - the inherent genetic talent of the student, the skill level, the physical characteristics and the mindset of the student. While teaching technique, the coach should take particular care to see if the stroke is bio-mechanically correct and look ahead to see if it will suit the mental attributes and physical structure of the student, when they mature into the senior level. A technically incorrect stroke will cause problems when competing at the senior level and a bio-mechanically incorrect stroke will result in loss of efficiency in stroke production and could also lead to injuries. Good knowledge of the various grips and what its effect on stroke production should be emphasized at the junior level itself.
In my opinion, at the junior level, the player should concentrate on developing all-round skills and developing favorite patterns of play. Strengths and Weaknesses should be assessed and technical inadequacies should be addressed. The player should focus in becoming a complete athlete with no weaknesses on the physical side.
Skills and patterns have to be learnt at an early stage. The player should be encouraged to try new skills and patterns in match situations even at the risk of losing and should be taught to fend for themselves in adverse competitive circumstances. The junior level is the learning stage and the launching pad for a successful competitive career.
The way you hit the tennis ball (Form) to achieve a certain objective (Function) is a personal choice. There is a range of acceptability and therefore important you understand the nuances and strike the right balance at the junior level itself.
